PS5: release date, price, specs and news for the PlayStation 5

The PS5 consoles are finally out and we have all the official details before the launch later this year

PlayStation has always offered the AV world more than just games. The last few years have scored well with DVD playback, Blu-ray and 4K streaming. So what does PlayStation 5 need to offer at launch? Will it be an 8K machine? Will it still support optical media? When is the PS5 release date? How much will the PS5 cost?

We have been reporting all PS5 news since it has been released and now have more solid information than ever after the latest official PS5 event, which got us the first check out of the new console.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, until recently the biggest event focused on the game, the PS5 console itself has now surfaced. In fact, build that console, as there are literally two versions of the PS5 on the way: an optical disk drive and a 'digital version' that does without.

The PS5 consoles are exceptionally stylish, like the 'DualEgine' controller already mentioned. In fact, we would argue that it is the most notable game machine ever made. For once, innumerable fanboy-produced concepts were also conservative. The event also revealed a variety of the latest accessories, including a replacement Pulse 3D wireless headset, a DualDesign charging station, during which you will dock two controllers directly, and an HD camera that will mimic the console's design.

Of course, with this game being an opportunity, we now also know about the PS5 games line-up. From an extended and augmented version of GTA 5 (yes, indeed), yet another entry within the Resident Evil franchise and hence the hotly anticipated Horizon II, has loads to get excited about.

We are waiting for an extended time to urge the present time. PlayStation's lead architect and console maker, Mark Cerny, got the PS5 info-ball back in an April 2019 interview and, since then, with Sony CEO Jim Ryan, expanding on what we would expect from a game console in October. did.

We got another huge PS5 info dump courtesy of Mark Cerny at the March 2020 Tech-Heavy Road to PS5 presentation. Sony's live PS5 "deep dive" on the PlayStation 5 architecture was heavily focused on incorporating SSD storage, and there was some doubt as to whether the PS5 would support Dolby Atmos. More below.

Sony officially confirmed some details, including the official name and rough release date, back in October 2019, and, at CES 2020, Sony confirmed the official PS5 logo. Sony has also leaked information about the PS5 DualShock 5 controller, which we now know as the DualSense controller.

So, where can we stand after the most important PS5 program ever? Read and absorb all the details of the currently available PlayStation 5 and start saving for your next console.
The PS5 price was not revealed during the June Games event and it will probably remain a secret until its launch. The first PlayStation and PS2 launched at £ 299 / $ 299, the PS3 started at £ 425 / $ 499 and so the new PS4 came in at £ 350 / $ 399. It is widely believed that a price north of £ 400 / $ 400 may be a recipe for trouble, but given the technical envelope by the PS5, we would not be surprised to learn that Sony would foresee the danger.

The trade war between China and the US can also have an impact when it involves manufacturing and shipping. Indeed, in June 2019, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft issued a joint statement that such a price would go up if the trade war continues. Enjoy that at your leisure.

In fact, according to Bloomberg, Sony has significant troubles to keep the PS5's price down. Blame the upcoming iPhone 12? Possibly. Sony is reportedly finding the value of components such as DRAM and NAND-non-volatile storage proving expensive, partly thanks to smartphone makers gearing up for their own next-gen devices Have been. The upholstery is reportedly a construction price of $ 450 (£ 350), which would also lead to better tickets in retail.

Indeed, just a few days after the console appeared, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told the BBC that Sony was looking to "emphasize value over price", adding to the suspicion that the PS5 kit would be dear is.

This is another reason, perhaps, that Sony has chosen to require a two-console approach, offering a full-fat, disc-play PS5 and a (possibly) cheaper disc-less 'digital version'. Perhaps the purpose is that the digital version will dip below the £ 400 / $ 400 barrier, while the version with the disk drive will complete with £ 499 / $ 499. Sony will certainly not risk the launch price of £ 500 / $ 500.

It is worth noting that while not confirming, we are expecting the two consoles to have performance parity, the only difference between the two models being the disk drive (or lack thereof). We are not talking about the standard and 'pro' versions estimated by YouTuber ReviewTechUSA.

 Playstation 5 release date

While a special date remains to be revealed, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 release date is Holiday 2020, setting up a battle royale for Christmas 2020 between the PS5 and the new Xbox Series X.

Earlier, in an interview with Wired, Cerny only stated that the PlayStation would not be available before April 5, 2020, but at CES 2020 the company finally went on record at the end of the PS5 release.

When will we get an official release date? During our June PS5 game event we had the opportunity to get out of our misery, now it's anyone's guess, and perhaps the chaotic nature of a COVID-wide world is encouraging Sony to keep their cards close to their chests , Which is very close to launch. . Said that Sony has claimed that the coronovirus epidemic has not affected the late 2020 PS5 release date.

Either way, we expect to see a steady stream of PS5 information by this point, so we may get a date as soon as July, or perhaps it will be announced in August as part of Virtual GDC 2020.

Whenever it comes, the goal for Sony is to go big, and go fast. Pre-Coronavirus, was planned to reach sales of six lakh units by March 2021. Doubtless, those plans would have been shifted in view of the global economic impact of COVID-19, but Sony has clearly invested in the PS5 and will be banking heavily on sales.

Games consoles themselves typically sell for very small, if any, profits, and Sony will help find content and services. The more PS5s the company has, the faster it can be.

PlayStation 5 Design: What does the PS5 look like?

After months of speculation, leaks and renders, we finally know what the PS5 looks like, and it is not a prediction for anyone. To these eyes, it's better: the utilitarian form of the Xbox Series X and Xbox One (and, to a lesser extent, PS4) has survived in favor of something completely folder, more sculpted, and more sci-fi. It will almost certainly prove divisive and can age quickly, but we are impressed at first glance.

Until now, Sony has chosen to display the PS5 almost exclusively in its vertical orientation (it can also be positioned horizontally), with its white shell overlooking a high-collar catsuit with a The opening takes place which falls further down than decent and creates a 'V' to convey that this is a fifth-generation PlayStation console.

That high, wide collar is separated from the machine's black body, which is almost certainly framed, allowing hot air generated to escape the processing bits and pieces of the console. Instead of hiding this functional part of the design, Sony has chosen to highlight it with some beautiful blue light. It is acting as a.

Although the official dimensions have not been revealed yet, a hard-working Redditor named GREBO7 has produced an image comparing the PS5 to the size of the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Spoiler Alert: This is widespread.

What's worth it, while the PS5 is much taller than the Xbox Series X (and every other console on the list for this matter), it's also slicker with a disk drive. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is still slim, and its quickness and symmetry make it undeniably a better seek of the two consoles, with the standard version's disk drives feeling a bit awkward, especially when they stand side-by-side. You can also assume that the digital version was designed first, with disk drives reluctantly added later.

The design includes two slim slots or buttons (they can also be light but neither were illuminated when illuminated on the underside of the front of the console), as well as a standard (possibly 3.0-certified) USB socket and a USB-C ahead. The rear of the machine has not been revealed yet, so the sockets that are there remain a mystery for now.

Crucially, the design of the final PS5 is very different from many leaks we've seen in the last few months. On August 13, a patent was registered as a Sony electronic device and Sony technical director Yushiro Oteri was listed as its designer. And below, thanks to LetsGoDigital, is a colorful and graphically rendered version of the black and white sketch with a patent.

To call that widest part of the mark would be an understanding: This massive, Flying V console was almost certainly a developer machine, or a concept for one, and was probably never considered as the final design.

On 10 October 2019, the leaked image of the developer version of PSO5, which was identical to the patent sketch from August, did not cease the ZoneOftech publication.

Sony began its CES 2020 press conference with a segment of the upcoming PS5, and while no new specs were released or pictures were shown, Sony confirmed the official PS5 logo.

Design ... won't shock you. It is in line with previous PlayStation logos, keeping it simple with white lines on a black background.
Yes, the PS5 will play 4K Blu-ray. Cerny initially confirmed that the PS5 would have an optical disc drive, but now we have confirmation that the standard PlayStation 5's disk drive will actually play 4K Blu-ray.

It was disappointing that the PlayStation 4 did not include a 4K Blu-ray drive, so we are happy to see Sony supporting the 4K disc format in the new console. Both Xbox One S and X currently come with 4K disc drives which gives them extra appeal on PS4 for home cinema enthusiasts. But the PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray will bring the fight to Xbox.

Of course, if you're not interested in playing 4K Blu-ray (or buying a disc-based version of the game) you can go for the disc drive-less PlayStation 5 digital version instead. We expect both consoles to feature video streaming apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney +, though no mention has been made of them yet.

Will PlayStation 5 support 8K video?
The PS5 will support 8K video to at least an extent. The PlayStation 5 will ship with an AMD Ryzen chip - a 7nm chip on the Zen 2 architecture - and a GPU from the Radeon Navi-family. It will also come with SSD storage. The promise from this trio of hardware is faster load times, larger bandwidth capabilities, and oodles of graphics grunts.

True, enough grunt for native 8K gaming? Probably, but probably only when working with simple titles. Big budget blockbusters may well employ a new version of the checkerboard upscaling that Sony currently uses to make PS4 Pro games ace on 4K displays.

For example, we know that Gran Turismo 7 will not be in 8K. The creator of the game, Kazunori Yamuchi, said: "I think, resolution wise, 4K resolution is enough."

Instead, the polyphony digital studio boss told GTPlanet that he is more curious about actually enhancing the experience to reduce the frame rate to 120 or 240fps.

Both the PS4 and PS4 Pro are already HDR-capable, supporting the HDR10 format, and there is no reason to believe that it is capable of any differentiation for the PS5. Will we also employ more advanced versions of HDR such as HDR10 + and Dolby Vision? We certainly won't dismiss it, especially because existing Xboxes already support the latter, but thus far nothing has been announced.

It was for the time suggested by the likes of YouTuber Zenj Nishikawa that Sony would announce a specific PS5 with the PS5 Pro, which would support the professional version, among other things, 8K video and better frame rates. However, no mention has been made of the PS5 Pro so far.

While it is clear that the PS5 becomes exceptionally powerful, it is also getting decent green credibility. The top of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, revealed a feature called "suspended gameplay" that gets through less power than current consoles. If it was employed by a million PS5 owners, that could represent a rebate in electricity consumption, like 1000 American homes.

PlayStation 5 Audio: Will PS5 Support Dolby Atmos?

PS5: Release Date, Price, Specs and News for PlayStation 5 (Image Credit: Dolby)
This does not seem possible, the minimum for the game. Again, the current crop of Xbox One already outstrips the PS4 within the audio department, certainly on paper, with Sony's console limited to 7.1 audio. Microsoft's machines, by contrast, with both Dolby Atmos and DTS: X for audio gaming and 4K for Blu-ray playback

Cerny has promised that the PS5 will replace a 'gold standard' in audio, but it seems as if the corporate is delivering it using new, bespoke technology.

On top of Sony's March 2020 PS5 update, Cerny left his audience with a feeling that the PS5 would not support Dolby Atmos. The PS5 will produce native 3D audio employing the newly-designed 'Tempest Engine' with Cerny stating that it wanted to include processing for more than 32 items that prohibit Dolby Atmos (Dolby has denied this claim).

So how will the PS5's 3D audio be delivered? Fully likely, the main goal is to be on headphones, initially minimal. The newly announced Pulse 3D headset will almost certainly lead the charge here, but it's also possible that the console itself will handle all the processing that standard headphones are plugged into the DualEngine Controller's headphone socket, which is 3D Audio will also be ready to deliver.

Can the console also be compatible with Sony's own 360 reality audio format? it seems likely.

But just because Sony focuses on its 3D audio formats does not mean that Atmos is definitely out. While there have been no reports, we would not be surprised if the Dolby format is additionally supported, especially for films and television shows. We also know that not every game will include Tempest Audio, and perhaps these will use Dolby Atmos as the solution for the next cleanest job.

We certainly hope that this is not a case of Tempest or Bust. Not everyone likes to wear headphones for games, and it is far less likely that Sony's new format is going to be compatible with all of the home cinema kits already on the market and in people's homes. The final item we all want to try is to try and buy new soundbars and AV receivers.

With each new PlayStation comes a replacement DualShock controller, except at this point it does not. Sony has gone to the latter stage and created a dual-engine controller to partner the PS5.

It has a better and modern looking design with a two-tone finish instead of the DualShox's quality single hue. Sony has promised that the new controller "will capture more of your senses while interacting with the virtual world in PS5 games. The features of Duelsienne, along with PS5's Tempest 3D Audiotech, provide players with a replacement sense of immersion Will do. "

The added immersion is primarily a return to action through a more developed sense of touch. The haptics have changed the rumble technique to create a wider range of more realistic response. Players will now get more granular sensations such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. The L2 and R2 trigger buttons feature adaptive, programmable resistance so that players can feel more or less tension through certain actions.

DualInsense is, of course, wireless. So far, there are no details on how long you get a charge, but Sony insisted that it tried to take care of a stronger battery life.

There is a built-in microphone array and speaker, which suggests that players can chat with their friends without the need for a gaming headset, and so the 'share' button has been replaced by the replacement 'create' button. It is "compatible with Sony" to create epic gameplay content to share with the world. More details on what happens when the launch comes close.

To fit these new components, the design and shape of the new controller have been tweaked. The angle of the hand triggers has been changed and hence the grip has also been updated. Its purpose is that the dualsense still feels lighter and less. The Sunshine Bar has also moved away from its position on the sides of the touchpad at the top of the DualShock 4, which may be nothing but a pleasing beauty.

If, for whatever reason, you can't stand the point, the PlayStation 5 should be backwards compatible with the PS4 controller.

Playstation 5: SSD Storage

According to Cerny's March 2020 PS5 update, an indoor SSD was the most important feature requested by game developers, and it is unnecessary to say, that the PS5 confirms delivery. Compared to a Cerny, compared to an HDD, it offers a 100x faster load speed which also suggests no load screens, ultra fast streaming and ultra fast boot speeds.

In real terms, streaming seems to be so fast that a game can quickly load all the graphics and textures behind a web player that can be around the player.

The PS5's SSD can be a custom unit with a capacity of 825GB. It is large, but conditionally huge, especially once you consider what proportion the next generation game needs. Thankfully, you'll expand the console's storage, although doing so can be a bit complicated.

You can connect an external disk drive via USB, but it seems that such a drive will not be fast enough to handle PS5 games. During which case, there are some possible uses for external USB disk drives, which we'll think about: to store PS4 games, and as a backup for PS5 games you're not currently playing, but to remove. is not needed. Subsequent use would negate the need to re-download a game from the web, potentially making it much faster to urge back action.

You can also expand interior SSD storage. It is not yet clear whether doing so would involve replacing the existing 825GB SSD or adding extras, but we know due to Digital Foundry, that either you need to be a very fast, PlayStation-approved, PCIe 4.0-based drive. - PS5 game play speed will not be mandatory in a normal SSD.

PlayStation is within the process of testing for possible compatible drives, but interestingly, Cerny says that thus far no one has hit Sony's minimum specs. They are hoping to try to do so by the top of the year, and after the PS5 is launched PlayStation will offer specific recommendations, but these next-gen SSDs are likely to be very expensive for a short time.

At least we're talking about (or will become a bare minimum) SSDs of an industry standard and no condition for PlayStation: a patent that was leaked on 5 November 2019 showed sketches of a mystery cartridge Those who were very confident were the expandable SSD storage modules for the PS5, but it appears that will no longer happen. This is probably an honest thing, as it means that prices are defined by the market as a whole and not by Sony.

PS5: Release Date, Price, Specs and News for PlayStation 5 (Image Credit: PlayStation)
Along with revealing plans for the PS5 console, Sony used its June PlayStation event to reveal a variety of PS5 accessories.

The most interesting of the bunch is undoubtedly the heartbeat 3D headset, which we hope Sony will push through thanks to the PS5's new 3D audio to enjoy. In terms of design, it does not look different from the current platinum wireless headset, even though with more matte white on show. Given how good Sony's past few gaming headsets are, we have high expectations for this new model.

Sony also made a great deal of their new media remote, designed to use the PS5 as a 4K Blu-ray player and video streamer, all the more intuitive.

We have now also seen a doubling charging station (for docking and charging two controllers at once) and an HD camera, and yet more stuff will be announced closer to launch.
